Cricket is closer to making its Olympic return after more than a century, as the organisers of the 2028 Los Angeles Games have proposed to include the sport in their list of new events. Cricket has only featured once in the Olympics, in 1900, when England beat France in a single match in Paris. The sport has also been part of two recent Commonwealth Games, in 1998 and 2022, with Australia winning gold in both editions. The proposed format for the Olympics is T20, with both men’s and women’s tournaments. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has been lobbying for cricket’s Olympic inclusion, hoping to tap into the huge Indian TV market and expand the sport’s reach in North America. The ICC chairman Greg Barclay welcomed the proposal and said it was a significant milestone for cricket’s Olympic aspirations. He thanked the LA28 officials for their support and looked forward to the final decision by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) members, who will meet in Mumbai next week during the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup
